Atlanta Museum of Contemporary Art

Architecture does not exist without structural engineering, yet within architecture design there is rarely a thread of conceptual similarity between the two. This conceptual proposal aims to originate the overall design concept with a structural system that remains integral to the architectural aesthetics. The structural system is a kit-of-parts made of pre-cast concrete, then skinned with aluminum fins and glass infill. The fins breathe in and out to let in the specific amount of light desired in particular areas of the museum. Because a museum is an experience in totality, not just a series of individual pieces, the structure and skin flow seamlessly from one area to another. In this way the visitor is unaware of his or her changing surroundings—only of the changing artwork on display.
