Good architects don't design walls; they design the space between the walls. Space is a form of communication that can be read. It's the unconscious aspect of architecture that can draw someone in or make them want to keep their distance.
Every material has certain properties that cannot be ignored or taken for granted. Every component of a structure has material properties that dictate how and why it should be used in a particular fashion. This keeps design honest and timeless.
Sustainability is not limited to the natural environment, despite how it's commonly marketed that way. A sustainable building is in harmony with any and everything that can be affected by the building. This can include economy, surrounding systems of infrastructure, or even human emotion.
